Talking About Stuff, with Mike and Christiana

Highs and Lows

High: Home visiting family

Low: Navigating multiple homes and trying to give a "fair" amount of time to each parent.

High: Lots of time to relax

Low: Very poor internet connections

High: Playing with pets and baby nephews

Low: Waking up in the middle of the night because the cat wants the bedroom door to be open or one of the babies has thrown up.

High: Starting game night with $10.00 in quarters and ending with 28.25 and a French Franc.

Low: Having to stand out in the cold to carry on a conversation because half of my family are smokers.

High: Holiday vacation

Low: Going home in just two more days
Wow, craziness!

Hey everybody!

I'm currently surfing from the bottom of a 56Kbps hole since I'm visiting family in Colorado. I occasionally get a very low wireless signal from a neighbor with an unsecured network, but it's very inconsistent and flaky.

I've had awesome holidays so far, and I have a lot to talk about, but for right now, I just wanted to get a post up to let you all know that I'm totally fine, had a Merry Christmas and am currently operating with a very significant sleep deficit that was pre-existing, but has worsened due to some bizarre thing happening here in Colorado where I wake up at 8:30 in the morning regardless of what time I went to bed or what I did the night before or whether or not I have to get up early I mean seriously I can't really understand what's going on it's been four mornings in a row now and it's just Bam! 8:30 on the nose every time, I think my body is conspiring against me for some reason, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it's motives are, but it tends to make me write in run-on sentences.

hehe

Yeah, that's why I'll be posting more later. Have a happy holiday week, y'all!

Christiana's going to be on LIVE RADIO!

I think I've told you guys about the Podcast Christmas Carol, right?

Well, our Ebeneezer Scrooge is David Lawrence, who has his own radio show, and he is having me and Chris Doelle, the director/producer on as guests tonight to promote it!

The David Lawrence Show is broadcast live between 7 and 10 Pacific time (That's 10-1 Eastern) on KBNP Portland, KNEW San Francisco, and WGN Chicago. I will be on in the third hour, so you can listen to me discuss the project live on the radio or on one of the radio station internet streams!

And of course, you'll be able to listen to the show itself late tonight or early tomorrow, (depending on when the editing gets done.) You can find it at apodcastchristmascarol.org.

I'm glowing right now.

Podcast #35 and SOME ANNOUNCEMENTS!

Hey everybody, Podcast #35 is up, and it contains some important announcements!

Am I the only one who doesn't think that this face transplant thing is a big deal?

Oh, I don't mean that it isn't a significant medical advance, just that this whole "controversy" about it just seems pretty stupid to me.

Okay, so according to this article, the primary issues of controversy are that one or both of the people involved (donor and recipient,) may have tried to commit suicide.

The reason that this is (apparently) a big deal is because some doctors have expressed concern that such a "psychologically challenging" operation was being done on a woman who may have questionable emotional stability.

But that just makes me think, oh, so leaving her with a terribly disfigured face with no lips or nose and you can see her teeth and jaw moving when she talks, that's better? Gosh, that wouldn't be a problem at all.

Think about it, whether or not the initial injury was the result of a suicide attempt, who WOULDN'T be unstable after having their freaking lips chewed off? If the transplant can help, then what's the problem?

I think that what this really all boils down to is that a lot of people are very squeamish about their faces, and there is somehow this perception that changing part of her face will give her problems with her self-identity, but frankly I don't see how it would.

After all, how we look can have an impact on how we see ourselves, but is anyone really going to have a serious psychological identity crisis because now their nose and lips look a little bit different? You don't even see it unless you look in a mirror. It's not like a brain transplant or something, it's not like she's an identical twin of the other woman now. The facial features are largely determined by the bones behind the skin anyway, so even if she had received a full-face transplant, she wouldn't look just like the other woman.

Okay, so rant over, it just irritates me that people who claim to be "expressing concern for the mental stability" of the patient are doing that by turning the whole thing into a circus.

Well, I'm glad that's settled...

Mona Lisa "Happy", computer finds

A computer has been used to decipher the enigmatic smile of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, concluding that she was mainly happy.
The painting was analysed by a University of Amsterdam computer using "emotion recognition" software.

It concluded that the subject was 83% happy, 9% disgusted, 6% fearful and 2% angry, journal New Scientist was told.

You know, I hear they also used a sophisticated computer model to determine that, before the arms broke off, the Venus de Milo was actually flipping the bird.

Survivor Finale!

Hey everybody!

Mike and I were not able to record our Survivor Finale podcast last night, but we're currently planning to do that Tuesday night, which can then incorporate today and tomorrow's editions of Survivor Live with Lydia, Rafe, Steph and Danni.

But just because the podcast isn't ready yet doesn't mean we can't talk about what happened.

So, what did you all think? I think it was the first time in a long time that I liked all three people in the final three and would have been almost equally happy with any outcome.

That said, Rafe was my favorite and so I can't quite believe him giving away a million dollars by releasing Danni from her promise! *Raise hand, smack forehead, Repeat*

The final four immunity maze was an awesome challenge, and I also thought the balancing act final three challenge was a nice sort of symbol of the balancing act that the entire game can represent.

Though I've liked Danni throughout the season, I was a little surprised by the 6-1 outcome, because frankly, I thought that Stephanie handled the Tribal Council better. Then again, the way that Danni overcame the numbers game was pretty damn impressive.

Richie Rich, richer than Scrooge McDuck? Did you SEE that money vault?
This is kind of fun. Forbes Magazine has come up with a list of the 15 Richest Fictional Characters!

I might dispute some of their choices, just because it's not clear what method they used to determine each character's net worth, location, etc. Duckburg, for example, is apparently in Florida. But still, it's pretty cool. Check it out, and be sure to read the profiles of each.

Podcast #31: Apprentice, Lost, Ricky Gervais and More!
Podcast #31 is up!

Download the mp3 file, subscribe to the feed or listen on the pickle player!

Here's what we talked about...

The Apprentice Season 4 = Bull$#!T

A little turned off by Alla's callousness, but still admiring her drive to be the best.

The Bull$#!T is really piling up in the boardroom.

It was pre-arranged that both members of the losing team would be fired regardless of performance.

Christiana still doesn't like what Randall and Rebecca did, but she softens a little just because she isn't good at holding grudges.

Conspiracy Theories: 1)It was pre-ordained that both members of the losing team would be fired. 2) It was a task where the winner was determined by a subjective opinion. 3) The final two is the African American man and the cute girl on crutches instead of the two semi-unlikeable blond women. 1+2+3=Bull$#!t

The Apprentice is no longer a must-watch show.

Is it ironic to complain about over-commercialization on a major network's prime-time reality show about Donald Trump and the business world?

The show's falling ratings are their own fault.

The Apprentice moving to LA for Season 6. Bad idea, won't help.

28:02
Lost with a glorious return to form!

One minor complaint: The scene with Kate and her "father" in the military recruitment office was unnecessarily murky and overcomplicated, but that is only one minor nitpick in an otherwise excellent episode.

Least surprising surprise of the week: The exploding house. (But still fun)

How about that tension between Mister Eko and Locke?

Fun mysteries to think about: Who removed the piece of the filmstrip and why?

Random tidbit from "The Official Lost Podcast": The doctor in the filmstrip has a false hand. (If you watch carefully, his left arm never moves)

Watching this show is like doing a huge puzzle. You find a piece with a face on it, so you know it's important, but you still have no idea how it fits into the rest of the picture.

An article on Ain't-It-Cool-News casts further doubt on the assertion of Mike's friend that he has the entire season 2 of Lost on DVD.

Ricky Gervais of the British "The Office" and "Extras" to do a podcast! The Ricky Gervais show

Podcast 30 (Survivor Guatemala Episode 12!) UPDATE!
Hey everybody, I don't have time to do the detailed notes right now, but podcast #30 is up, in which Mike and I talk about the latest (and possibly greatest so far) episode of Survivor Guatemala.

Download the mp3 here or subscribe to the feed!

More details later, but how awesome was that episode, eh?

As promised...

We go on the record: Christiana was right about Danni!

Lydia: Did she step up this week or was she just going with the flow again?

Everything's up in the air now.

Rafe: The nicest guy on earth.

Was Judd actually untrustworthy?

Rafe's plan.

Was Judd untrustworthy? (Part 2)

For all that bitching about food last week, Lydia spends all her money on the mosquito net?

Mike has an excellent observation about the impact of Rafe's religion on his gameplay, namely, his Mormon mission training has helped him learn how to persuade people in a very low key way.

The twins.

Bet you all didn't even realize you were social anaylists, did you?

Christiana gives Gary retroactive props for an excellent explanation of his really bad lie on Survivor Live.

Did CBS selectively edit to play up Gary's lie in order to attract more NFL fans? Do survivors $#!T in the woods?

Conspiracy theories: Was Danni tipped off about Gary's secret identity?

Best episode of the season so far?

What would have happened if Danni hadn't won immunity?

After the reward: The best possible division of the tribe to cause trouble!

A purely mental immunity challenge is a nice change of pace: "We're going to have to use our brains... dammit!"

Being bitten by freaking crocodiles.

"I think I see a pattern." Why didn't they tell Cindy?

Scumbags.

Everything can be spun as a positive or a negative.

Why didn't they tell Cindy? (Part 2)

Mike's roting for Cindy and Stephanie. Christiana is rooting for Rafe and Danni.

What's Cindy's next move?

Amazing that Rafe is still able to act as though he's not a threat.

The seemingly frivolous reward challenge becomes crucially important.

Great, great show!

.
Well, that was money well spent...

Alleged footprints of early Americans found in volcanic rock in Mexico are either extremely old - more than 1 million years older than other evidence of human presence in the Western Hemisphere - or not footprints at all, according to a new analysis published this week in Nature.

A Podcast Christmas Carol!
Hey everybody, big news!

I can't provide all the details just yet, but I've gotten involved in a really exciting project.

Over at the Podcast Pickle podcasting community, a number of people, including myself have decided to put together a radio-drama-style adaptation of "A Christmas Carol".

Check out the preliminary banner!

A Podcast Christmas Carol

And what is my involvement you may ask? Well, along with three other people, I'm writing it! This all came rather suddenly, but I'm really excited by the whole project so far.

We've got a lot of people getting involved with this thing and it's going to be really cool, so keep your eye out for future updates and we're going to get it out by Christmas!

More to come!
