Here's what we talked about!

09/24/06 is the 1-year anniversary of the Christiana Talks About Stuff podcast!

Mike and I are playing clips from the last year.

First clip: The beginning of Christiana Talks About Stuff #1, originally posted on 09-24-05. In it, I introduce myself.

Clip: Mike's first appearance on CTAS #2, where, with very poor sound quality, we introduce Mike and we explain the dynamic of our collaboration, wherein I do all the work.

Clip: from CTAS #9, Walking on crutches and Mike's theory about guys and balls

Mike isn't sure his theory holds up.

Clip: On Survivor, who is the monkey?

We feel that our analysis was right on.

Clip: From CTAS #17, I time Mike as he returns from the bathroom, and he passes on one Canadian's theory about hand-washing

Once again, Mike is not anti-Canadian!

Clip: Also from CTAS #17, On being pretentious: Human petting zoos, cocktails, and an amazing new product!

We feel that last clip is a very good representative example of our conversations.

Clip: I'm the momma of a very sick iPod.

Mike is jealous of my iPod and I lie to make him feel better.

Clip: Terrel Owens versus Darth Vader

That was a lot of storm and fury that went nowhere.

Clip: Mike's hopeless battle against DVR's

Mike explains his ultimate defeat, and wonders if his current stress stems from the lack of a foe.

Clip: Porn on video iPods

We discuss the limitations inherent in the medium regarding porn.

Clip: I put Mike to sleep.

Unfortunately, it was not an isolated incident.

Clip: Introduction to Biodynamic Cheese

Clip: I actually try some Biodynamic Gouda, and like it!

It was hard to find some genuine biodynamic cheese.

Clip: The Razzies, and Mike's mission in life

Mike stands by his assessment, but suspects he'd been drinking a little bit.

Clip: The GMC Yukon and the ingenious three-toed-sloth.

No more GMC Yukon commercials on Survivor, and the history of Survivor car-sponsors.

Clip: Taxes, and my anti-IRS rant.

Clip: Proper usage of the phrase: "Oh Snap"

We've podcasted for a year now, and we're looking forward to more.

Mike visited Dante's Tomb in Florence

Dante is "The Underrated Guy" from the Renaissance

He gave literature to the people

Preach it, brother!

"What happened to Mike in Madrid"

Pluto is no longer a planet? I call BS and explain in great detail why. (Link to the Skepticality show that makes the point even better)

We're bummed about Steve Irwin

We loved him for his passion and enthusiasm

Here's what we talked about...

Survivor, we've missed you!

Opening credits returns to the more melody-driven theme, which I like.

We jump right in: The racially divided teams

Mike and I had very different, but both positive, reactions to the team divisions

I still saw a game of individuals, Mike was much more aware of the cultural issues surrounding each team.

Are there culturally "white" things? What are they?

Disclaimer: It's pretty much impossible to talk about race without offending someone.

The nature of Stereotypes.

The division of races on the show is still somewhat simplistic. All four categories can encompass a lot of diversity of their own.

Do white people have the "benefit" of not having to think much about race?

Where we're coming from: I'm white (red hair, fair skin), American for several generations back, then British-Irish.
Mike's family came from Northern Spain several generations back, his father is Cuban, but he has a light complexion.

Because he is light-skinned, Mike sometimes encounters "reverse-racism".

How long will the racial divisions last?

Mike listened to a hip-hop station on Friday morning to hear the "black" response. (and also because he likes hip-hop)

To the nay-sayers, why is this "racially-divisive" when something like the Olympics is so wonderful and uniting?

The ultimate result is not divisive, and in fact, has far more minority contestants than usual, which is a good thing.

The Hoi Poloi?

We discuss the intellectual merits of Survivor.

On chickens: We feel possession is 9/10ths of the law.

Why did Sekou and Nate feel that Jonathan's alleged chicken-theft was a good reason to exile him?

The challenge made it too easy to make non-PC jokes.

Billy's Latin machismo.

What Sekou and Nate should have done.

Each team's racial unity moment and "Go whities!"
Podcast #88: Vicodin, Celebrities and Life Lessons
No, it's not the Survivor show yet. That'll be tomorrow or Saturday.

But it IS show #88, with all the glory that that entails...

My San Francisco Emergency Room Adventure (Includes plug for Planet Retcon!)

Meeting celebrities

I got to meet Ellen Muth of Dead Like Me.

We are both big fans, but for subtly different reasons.

Walking the DragonCon walk of fame with Tee Morris, and my pathetic geek-girl story.

But I learned a life lesson: She who hesitates is lost.

Red Versus Blue Bumper

Billy West Bumper

Alan Tudyk Bumper

Summer Glau Bumper

Picture of me with the Mythbusters Build Team!
Me and the Mythbusters Build Team

Mike offers a helpful rule of thumb for meeting smart, pretty actresses.

Ellen Muth was really cool.

The last night of DragonCon was a lot of fun: We had a late, long, big game of Killer Bunnies.

Partying with podcasters is fun, because generally speaking, they're smart and they talk a lot.

Getting stuck in an elevator with 17 people.

Pant-Cast with JC Hutchins.

It was my first DragonCon, but it won't be my last.

Here's what we talked about...

Driving the Pacific Coast Highway from SF to LA! (Check out the movie, and the pictures! Pacific Coast Highway 1, Pacific Coast Highway 2, Pacific Coast Highway 3, Pacific Coast Highway 4

It was 13 hours of driving, considerably more than advertised.

Still, it was amazing. The most fun I've ever had while driving.

My butt, my right ankle and my right shoulder were pretty sore afterward.

Driving through the LA Metro area was not the fun part.

My hotel was literally a block away from Disneyland

My Worldcon experience got off to a rocky start.

Things improved dramatically when I spotted Jack Mangan, Evo Terra and Matthew Wayne Selznick on their way to the podcast party suite.

I didn't get to meet John Varley like I'd hoped, but had a really great time nonetheless.

I met Mark Jeffrey from The Pocket and the Pendant, Steve Eley from Escape Pod.

Lots of talking shop over alcohol.

I am a BSG spoiler tease.

I spent an hour as Evo Terra.

Defending Escapist Fiction?

I took highway 5 back, shorter, but less beautiful.

My first In-N-Out Burger

Some sad news: Between Worldcon and DragonCon, my guinea pig Guinevere died.

Guinevere

Secret-Agent Pig

Ernesto messed with my DragonCon travel plans.

Dragon Con is huge. Check out my DragonCon pics on my Flickr Feed!)

I got a room in the Hyatt through Mur Lafferty.

Worldcon is cool, but a more normal convention. DragonCon is crazy.

Name any aspect of science fiction and there will be hundreds of people there who are passionate about it.

DragonCon will put your ability to deal with crowds to the test, but I kinda liked that.

Some amazing costumes there.

It was really neat being there and meeting people who have heard and enjoyed my work! Plus the parsec nomination? It was a blast.

I was asked to sit in on some panels. Someone asked about the risks of podcasting unpublished fiction. Well, before I started, the story was sitting on my hard drive. Now I'm sitting in on panels at DragonCon!

I didn't win the Parsec, but that's okay, because Patrick McClean is awesome and I can't be upset about losing to him.

Mike and I have a lot to talk about.

We start with Mike's trip to Italy

It got off on the wrong foot, when his flight over didn't offer free alcohol!

Mike is denied his right to cool passport stamps.

Europe is like a dance club with many rooms.

I am weirded out by mysterious clicking sounds.

Audio GOLD! I treat all you lucky listeners to my computer fumblings

Papers? Papers? Not anymore.

OMG! European flights refuse to take obvious safety precautions!

Mike's trip started in Rome.

Mike's Grandma made him afraid of Gypsies.

Beware the scooter gangs of Rome

Apparently Rome is very polluted, but also has all this amazing historical stuff just mixed in with everything else.

A big fountain of Neptune

Catholocizing Roman ruins.

In Europe, no open container law!

More interesting people watching.

MacAffee is very insistent.

Poaching tours

Organized tours versus wandering

Checklist tourists

Some of the big cathedrals really have an amazing aura to them

Pictures of the Sistine Chapel do not really convey the sense of being there

"All that and nunchuck skills too..."

Visiting the Ninja Turtle Tombs

More amazing sculptures

Michaelangelo and Harlan Ellison

"That's it, sculpting's done."

The ash people of Pompei

A novel set in Pompei without the eruption? People would feel cheated.

Vesuvius's eruption was probably somewhat surprising.

Mike's mysterious restroom encounter. (Probably not what you think)

The beauty of Florence: Pre-rennaissance versus post

Mike crushes on ANOTHER European bartender

"Holding up the leaning tower" It's not dumb, it's ironic!

Micro-showers!

Goth towns

Here's what we talked about...

We've both seen: The Descent

We both liked it, but Mike has been enjoying the evolution of his opinions on the film.

Seeing it without knowing ________?

The characters are distinct, but without being assigned superficial "Traits"

The film has credibility, because the characters, for the most part, are experienced cavers and climbers, not just irresponsible teenagers.

Visually, the film is excellent, both in evoking claustrophobia, and in the use of color.

Warning: Serious spoilers! We basically talk about the ending.

The film expertly subverts some cliches in a really interesting way.

The differences between the British ending and the American Ending. The British Ending on YouTube

Survivor divided on racial lines

Survivor as a social experiment

Mike's awkward moment

Equipment troubles -- microphone stand / laptop display

I'm in California...

My trip to LA for worldcon, driving from SF to LA with no cruise control.

Mike is going to Italy!

Learning Italian... because.

Mike is threatened with hypothetical death.

Worse than the TSA

Italian highwaymen are educated

Useless Italian phrases

There are, how you say, snakes on this plane.

Tailoring foreign curse words

How to see Snakes on a Plane

An elegant exhortation.

Promo: Skepticality (Hooray for their triumphant return!)
